The third film in the season Imamura Shōhei: A restless curiosity about human nature is a genre-blending story of the search for a missing man.

Imamura Shōhei directed A Man Vanishes (1967) after taking an interest in the phenomenon of the increasing number of disappearances in Japan during the 1960s.

The film starts in a documentary style, investigating the real-life disappearance of Ōshima Tadashi, a young salesman from Niigata Prefecture.

Imamura is accompanied by Ōshima’s fiancée, Hayakawa Yoshie, and actor Tsuyuguchi Shigeru as they travel across Japan, visiting Ōshima’s acquaintances to track him down. However, Imamura soon shifts the focus of the film onto Yoshie and the story begins to move beyond the bounds of documentary.

The screenings are in Japanese with English subtitles. Duration: approx. 130 mins

Guests who are booked to attend the screening can also enjoy 10% off drinks at the Stand on their way in.
