About the Event

Join us for the screening of Aloha ʻĀina (50mins), part of the Shifting Landscapes Film Series presented in partnership with Emergence Magazine.

This powerful documentary follows Native Hawaiian poet Jamaica Heolimeleikalani Osorio as she explores ancestry, resistance, and love for land. Through poetry, activism, and storytelling, the film invites us to rethink our relationship with place and history.

Following the screening, we will host a facilitated reflection and discussion using the Shifting Landscapes Engagement Guide, offering space to connect the story of the film with your own landscape and community.

The Film

Aloha ʻĀina tells the story of acclaimed poet Jamaica Osorio, who works to protect sacred Hawaiian sites and create a future rooted in aloha ʻāina—“love for and of the land.”

As a teenager, Jamaica found her voice through slam poetry, using performance to share personal experiences and the history of Hawai‘i’s colonisation with growing audiences. Today, her work challenges linear and reductive histories and dismantles fantasies of Hawai‘i as a tourist playground.

The film calls us instead toward an embodied understanding of land, ancestry, and relationship—inviting us to imagine what becomes possible when we live with care for both the Earth and each other.

Shifting Landscapes Film Series

Aloha ʻĀina is one of four films in the Shifting Landscapes series, which explores the power of art and story to orient us amid the darkness of our time. Each film follows an artist responding to profound changes in their landscape—from a melting glacier in Iceland to the vanishing song of the nightingale in southern England—offering new ways of seeing and being in connection with the Earth.
