Event description
Screening of documentary Arupãb, about the Pataxó indigenous tribe in Brazil and their struggle to preserve their rights and culture.

About this Event

*** Due to last-minute licensing issues, we unfortunately have to cancel our screening of Embrace of the Serpent by Ciro Guerra.***

Living along the “costa dos descobrimentos,” the discovery coast of Brazil’s Bahia, the Pataxó people were one of the first indigenous tribes to get in contact with European colonizers. Today, more than 500 years later, they are still trying to preserve what is left of their culture, their land, and their traditional lifestyle. Some of the personalities portraying in this documentary are Ubiranan, who is selling indigenous culture to tourists; Akurinã, a wisdom keeper with a Shiva-T-Shirt; Alice, a 14-year-old activist whose village was destroyed by bulldozers; and Jaçanã, a 83-year old shaman. While they are all part of the same ethnic group, different people live in different realities. Yet for all, arupãb or “education” in patxohã, the indigenous pataxó language, is seen as the key instrument to continue the struggle for their rights and their culture. The result of 7 months of living with the Pataxó, the stunning images of this documentary take us into the contemporary mosaic of the life of these people.
