With 2025 marking the 80 years of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, the first film in our Imamura Shōhei season A restless curiosity about human nature depicts the tragic fate of people whose lives were changed on August 6, 1945.

Black Rain (1989) is an adaptation of a 1965 novel of the same name by Ibuse Masuji (1898 – 1993). Picking up in the immediate aftermath of the bombing, it follows Shizuma Shigematsu, who manages to return home and flee the devastated city with his wife Shigeko and niece Yasuko. Although initially showing no symptoms, the three survive the war. Years later, Yasuko, who was exposed to the radioactive “black rain”, begins to suffer from symptoms and the family faces a harrowing journey.

The screenings are in Japanese with English subtitles. Duration: approx. 123 mins
