LOOK! Donegal’s newest film club launches with a very special screening of ‘Homeward’ by Ukrainian filmmaker Nariman Aliev.

About this event

Regional Cultural Centre in Letterkenny will host a screening of award-winning Ukrainian drama ‘Homeward’ on Wednesday 16th March at 8.30pm, with all proceeds going to children and families displaced by the current conflict.

Directed by Nariman Aliev in 2019, Homeward portrays a Tatar father and son in a striking Ukrainian road-trip drama across a war-torn land.

Aliev said “Ukraine is fighting for its freedom and for its right to freedom” and made a plea for Donegal people to make a donation if they can, “We need support and assistance: military, economic, informational. You can personally make donations for the needs of Ukrainian defenders so that this war does not end up in your home tomorrow. Thank you everyone who support Ukraine. It’s very important for us."

The LOOK! Film club is chaired by Donegal film director James Doherty and Regional Cultural Centre Letterkenny and aims to present regular film screenings and film events at the RCC and throughout Donegal venues over the coming years.

Film Information

Homeward (dir. Nariman Aliev)

Mustafa (Akhtem Seitablayev) and his college-aged son, Alim (Remzi Bilyalov) have set out to a morgue in Kyiv to recover the body of Alim’s older brother, Nazim, yet another casualty of the war with Russia. Although Nazim had been living in Kyiv with his Orthodox wife, Olesya, Mustafa is insistent that his son is given a traditional Muslim burial beside his mother’s grave in Crimea, and excludes Olesya from the road-trip.

Mustafa is a hot-tempered and severe. There is also tension between father and son as city-life has exacerbated the generational gap between Mustafa and Alim. However, one commonality unites them – their shared language of Crimean Tatar. Along the way, they face many obstacles and Alim is hard-pressed to accept his father's determination to uphold tradition at all costs. However, the on-going challenges encourage the pair to better understand each other and profoundly impacts their relationship.
