Background:
Power Trip: Fracking in the UK (63mins) takes you onto the frontlines of UK resistance in the battle to stop the controversial energy extraction process known as Fracking. The film follows grandmothers who set up a campaign group (Lancashire Nanas) and teamed up with younger activists (Reclaim the Power) to shut down the Fracking sites of Cuadrilla. Blackpool (Lancashire) and Balcombe (West Sussex) became the frontline of resistance as trucks were occupied and gates were blocked.
Similar battles are afoot in the Surrey Hills with oil exploration planned for Leith Hill and for full commercial production at Brockham and Horse Hill near Gatwick. Local campaign groups A Voice for Leith Hill; the Leith Hill Action Group and Brockham Oil Watch are fighting to keep oil in the ground.
Local residents in Surrey and Sussex are also fighting an injunction by UK Oil and Gas (UKOG) to stifle
peaceful protest. They have launched a crowdfunder to raise money for their legal costs.
Power Trip includes insights from Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell, Caroline Lucas MP, Journalist George Monbiot, Energy Research Institute director Prof Andrew Barron. The Reclaim the Power activist network and the Founder of Ecotricity Dale Vince also feature amongst the voices of local residents and councillors.
