Description

You're invited to the Sussex Premiere of

Power Trip: Fracking in the UK (63mins) - an Undercurrents film

followed by an update on oil drilling activities in Sussex and Q/A panel discussion

Power Trip takes you onto the frontline of the battle to stop the controversial energy extraction process known as Fracking. This inspiring film shows how students have forged alliances with grandmothers to take direct action against the fracking industry out of frustration as democratic processes are over-turned.

In Lancashire and Sussex trucks are occupied, drilling sites are blocked and supply chains are disrupted. Police are spending millions of pounds trying (and largely failing) to stop the daily protests. One campaigner tries to make a citizens arrest on the Prime Minister for allegedly misleading the public over this form of extreme energy extraction.

The film widens the discussion to highlight the role of the media and lobby groups in shaping public perception of unconventional gas and oil exploration. It highlights what happens when social licence is lost - a timely warning for those of us living in the Weald where significant opposition to drilling licences hasn’t prevented operations starting and where campaigners against Broadford Bridge near Pulborough, and several other sites, are being threatened by an injunction in the High Court.

Power Trip includes insights from Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell, Caroline Lucas MP, Journalist George Monbiot, Energy Research Institute director Prof Andrew Barron. The Reclaim the Power activist network and the Founder of Ecotricity Dale Vince also feature amongst the voices of local residents and councillors.
