Description

Film screening: The Square (1957) with introduction from Josephine Botting, Film and TV Fiction Curator at the BFI

In a rundown part of London's King's Cross, an aged resident (screen veteran A.E. Matthews) finds community spirit alive and well when he is threatened with eviction from his home. The Square was the first film from director Michael Winner, who went to make quirky 1960s comedies such as I’ll Never Forget What’s ‘Isname (1967) before heading to Hollywood where he made his name with the violent thriller Death Wish (1974).

This far gentler, formative work was financed by Winner's father for £1000, but was never seen on the big screen. Part of the BFI’s Britain on Film collection, the film will be shown after an introduction from Josephine Botting, Film and TV Fiction Curator at the BFI.

Donate Now

Bedford Square Festival is proud to be in partnership with the charity Centrepoint and will be fundraising for the charity throughout the Festival. Centrepoint is the UK's leading charity for homeless young people, they support over 9,000 16-25 year olds into housing and employment every year.

All of Bedford Square Festival’s events are free, so we are asking festival goers whether they’d be able to donate to our charity partner.

Any amount you can donate, no matter how small, would be greatly appreciated and will help change lives.

As our events are free, not everyone who asks for tickets comes. To make sure we have a full house we allocate more tickets than there are seats. We do our best to get the numbers right, but unfortunately we occasionally have to disappoint people, so please arrive in good time for the start of the event.
