Film subtitling course

El Instituto Cervantes de Londres organiza en colaboración con el catedrático Jorge Diez-Cintas un curso de subtitulado de películas, que se impartirá del martes 14 al viernes 17 de octubre.

Jorge Diaz-Cintas es Catedrático de Estudios de Traducción y director fundador (2013-2016) del Centro de Estudios de Traducción (CenTraS) del University College de Londres.

Ha escrito numerosos artículos, números especiales y libros sobre traducción audiovisual, entre ellos "Subtitling: Concepts and Practices" (con Aline Remael, 2021).

Pionero en traducción audiovisual, ha formado a futuros traductores en seis continentes, y es ponente habitual en conferencias y eventos internacionales. A su vez, ha ofrecido servicios de consultoría al Parlamento Europeo, la Comisión Europea, OOONA, Deluxe y Netflix, entre otros.

Es el Editor Jefe de la serie New Trends in Translation Studies de Peter Lang y ha recibido el Premio Jan Ivarsson (ESIST, 2014) y el Premio Xènia Martínez (ATRAE, 2015) por sus inestimables servicios en el campo de la traducción audiovisual.

Fechas y contenido del curso:

Martes 14 de octubre: Introducción a la subtitulación: protocolos espaciotemporales.

Miércoles 15 de octubre: Localización de subtítulos y criterios ortotipográficos. Plataformas de subtitulación en la nube.

Jueves 16 de octubre: Subtitulado al inglés: registro informal y referentes culturales

Viernes 17 de octubre: Subtitulado al español: lenguaje sensible.

Todas las sesiones contarán con partes de teoría, deberes para hacer fuera de clase, ejercicios en clase, e interacción grupal.

Se utilizará el software OOONA para los ejercicios prácticos de subtitulado y para representar las condiciones reales del entorno de trabajo del subtitulador.

Los participantes necesitarán un ordenador con Google Chrome instalado, acceso a internet y auriculares.

Instituto Cervantes London, in collaboration with Professor Jorge Diez-Cintas, is organising a course on film subtitling, which will be held from Tuesday 14 to Friday 17 October.

Jorge Diaz-Cintas is Professor of Translation Studies and founding director (2013-2016) of the Centre for Translation Studies (CenTraS) at University College London. He has written numerous articles, special issues and books on audiovisual translation, including Subtitling: Concepts and Practices (with Aline Remael, 2021). A pioneer in audiovisual translation, he has trained future translators on six continents and is a regular speaker at international conferences and events. He has also provided consulting services to the European Parliament, the European Commission, OOONA, Deluxe, and Netflix, among others. He is the Editor-in-Chief of Peter Lang's New Trends in Translation Studies series and has received the Jan Ivarsson Award (ESIST, 2014) and the Xènia Martínez Award (ATRAE, 2015) for his invaluable services in the field of audiovisual translation.

Course dates and content:

Tuesday 14 October: Introduction to subtitling: space-time protocols.

Wednesday 15 October: Localisation of subtitles and orthotypographical criteria. Cloud-based subtitling platforms.

Thursday 16 October: Subtitling into English: informal register and cultural references.

Friday 17 October: Subtitling into Spanish: sensitive language.

All sessions will include theory, homework assignments, in-class exercises and group interaction.

OOONA software will be used for practical subtitling exercises and to simulate the real working conditions of a subtitler.

Participants will need a computer with Google Chrome installed, internet access, and headphones.
