Dashing Through The Snow! It's The Filmonik Festive Challenge!
7.00pm, Thursday December 12th – 7.30pm Sunday December 15th
Screening Sunday December 15th 7.30pm till Late, Cornerhouse Annexe, Oxford Road, etc
'Tis a reason to be jolly. This year Filmonik is hijacking the Cornerhouse Annexe for our traditional end of year celebration. We’ll be celebrating the Winter Solstice in style, with seasonal cinematic stocking-fillers galore, drinks, maybe a few mince pies. Absolutely no overpriced German Market tat. There'll be an open screening section and a few old favourites...
And we'll be screening the results of... The Filmonik Festive Challenge!
Yep, if Santa can deliver all of those presents to all of the good little boys and girls all over the world in less than twelve hours, then we're certain all you intrepid filmmakers out there can deliver a seasonal short film in seventy-two, whether you've Rudolf The Red-nosed Reindeer to guide you or not.
Now, some of you hardened Filmonik Kabaret veterans are no doubt sitting back smugly wondering “where's the challenge in that?” What if we told you that the film not only has to be festively-themed, but that there will be other essential requirements as well. And we are not going to tell you what these are in advance. They will be announced at the initial production meeting on Thursday evening. Which means no up-front preparation, no sneaky planning and pre-production, no turning up with previously-written scripts. Everything has to be created from scratch within the 72 hour period.
But as you have all been so very good this year, we have a present for you all. A big one.
Filmonik finally has its very own permanent space, right in the city centre. It won't be open to the public till the new year, but we will be making it available to all of you lucky challenge participants to serve as daytime lab, and, if you wish, as a shooting location. It's a work in progress at the moment, but this will be your chance to get a preview of the place, and see the potential.
NOTE: This is a limited-number event, and all tickets must be purchased in advance.

Filmonik Screenings are open to all filmmakers, with no pre-screening or censorship. However, it is understood that the filmmaker has the full rights to submit the film to Filmonik, that any relevant legal clearances have been sought by the filmmaker, and that films shall contain no pornographic, libellous, or otherwise potentially litigious material. Filmonik reserves the right to reject any future films by filmmakers who break these rules in any way. Please note that Filmonik events are targeted at an adult audience. Due to the unpredictable, “open mic” nature of the screenings, we do not consider them really suitable for anyone under the age of 18. It is understood that any relevant clearances have been sought by the submission holder, therefore Filmonik will not be liable for any third party claims. Filmonik and Kino00 are not affiliated to Manchester's Kinofilm Festival.
All film work created during the Kabaret (or similar events ) must be screened first at the Kabaret. Should there be insufficient time for it to screen at a particular screening, due to the number of films, it must screen at either the next Kabaret screening, or the next Filmonik open screening before it can be screened elsewhere. While filmmakers are encouraged to use the Kabaret to network, form new creative and collaborative partnerships, and develop relationships that they may draw on in their future filmmaking, films made during the Kabaret are FOR the Kabaret. We will not look kindly upon people who use the event as a means of getting others to use their Kabaret time to work on films that are intended for some other purpose. Films created for the Kabaret can certainly subsequently be screened elsewhere, and work created can be incorporated into other projects later. But only if everyone who worked on the film agrees to their work being used in this way, and so long as all are credited and the film’s / section of the film’s origins at the Kabaret are acknowledged. Filmonik is a crew-based event, open to amateurs and professionals alike. Within the lab, everyone is equal. Collaboration and experimentation and general openness are the goal. We do not condone any behaviour or action that might seem a barrier to entry, or might intimidate or discourage those new to the Kabaret. Prima donna behaviour is frowned upon. Improvisation is encouraged, auditions are not.

Filmonik is a not-for-profit filmmaking organization, based in Manchester UK and running international events throughout the year.
We hold a variety of film screenings, from "open-mic" nights to exclusive presentations. Our flagship event is the Kabaret – a weeklong, open-all-hours filmmaking workshop with public screenings of all the films our participants create.
