Practical financial management for charities

Speaker: Jen Gerrard

This course is designed to explore key aspects of financial management for charitable organisations and to enhance your working knowledge of Microsoft Excel - an essential tool for anyone working in charity finance.

In addition to considering the financial components of the Trustees' Annual Report (such as the Reserves Policy) we will get to grips with essential formulae, pivot tables and handy shortcuts in Excel, including the basics of preparing budgets and cash flow forecasts and how to assess the performance of your organisation from management information provided.

A combination of lecturing, practical exercises (using Microsoft Excel) and discussion will ensure that you come away with a good understanding of both trustee and/ or director responsibilities and the practical aspects of financial management for charitable entities

Suitable for those working with:

  • Unincorporated charitable organisations (i.e. associations or trusts)
  • Charitable companies
  • Charitable Incorporated Organisations (CIOs)

Whether you are a trustee or an individual working in charity finance, this course could be for you if you would like to:

  • Gain clarity over what it means to be a Trustee and an appreciation of the associated statutory responsibilities;
  • Understand what financial information is key to the Trustees’ Annual Report, including how to set and monitor a Reserves Policy;
  • Be able to work smarter not harder with Excel using the tips and tricks you will learn
  • Be able to prepare a basic budget or cash flow forecast using Microsoft Excel - both at project and organisational level;
  • Learn what constitutes useful management information - in the context of your own organisation;
  • Feel more confident when reporting on the financial performance of an organisation.

A basic working knowledge of Excel would be useful if you are planning to attend - for example, being able to open, save and format a workbook and use basic functions like 'SUM'. If you have any queries in this regard please get in touch on and a member of the team will be happy to advise.

  • Financial management - overview
  • Trustee responsibilities
  • Trustees' Annual Report - drafting key financial disclosures
  • Essential Excel skills for a busy finance manager
  • Preparation of budgets and cash flow forecasts
  • Assessing financial performance

Should you have any queries regarding the above, or would like to be added to our waiting list, then please do not hesitate to contact us on and we will be pleased to assist in any way that we can.
