Event description
A workshop to help identify your transferable skills and plan how to fill any key gaps in enjoyable, achievable ways.

About this Event

Based on learning from our pilot workshop, colleagues in the University Careers Service have updated this workshop to enhance its practical application, specifically with postdocs in mind.

This workshop will be facilitated by Dr Rachel Bray, Careers Adviser for Researchers, and lunch will be provided.

The aims are to

• Enable you to invest time in your career thinking and activities,

• Reveal the core employability skills you have developed in your research environments,

• Find ways to describe your skills appropriately for applications to various sectors or roles, and during networking

• Identify any key gaps and plan how to fill them in enjoyable, achievable ways.

To gain the most from this session, please complete the following exercises from the Oxford Careers Compass, which you will receive via email, and bring them to the workshop.

i) Pages 1 and 2 provide a general introduction,

ii) Use the third sheet to record thoughts and ideas relating to each core employability skill. As this is a simple PowerPoint, you can easily make additional copies of sheet 3 and edit by adding text in the relevant spaces.

You may find it helpful to read or complete other exercises in the Compass as a way to identify where you are in your career thinking.

For those who participated in the pilot workshop, please note that these are different exercises.

For all: As the Careers Compass was written for career stages from first degree onwards, our workshop discussions will include skills developed during research that may not be adequately reflected in the Compass. You may find it helpful to read or complete other exercises in the Compass as a way to identify where you are in your career thinking.

Please note we are offering priority booking for Oncology until midday on Monday 14th January, the workshop will then be opened up to all postdocs within MSD.
