Event description

Description

After a successfully funded Kickstarter Campaign and Premiere in Belfast back in October, Squeaky Pedal are proud to host the London premiere of 'Finding Wee Paddy' at The Archivist. After a two year long film project telling the incredible true story of the discovery of a British soldier’s lost grave in Shanghai.

"Finding Wee Paddy manages to bring back to life a story that is fast escaping living memory"

Peter Harmsen, New York Times Best Selling Author & Historian

The documentary tells the incredible moving story of Sara Moran’s 20 year long fight against the odds to locate the lost grave of her uncle, Royal Ulster Rifleman Patrick McGowan. Patrick was killed whilst attempting to shelter civilians from a Japanese air attack during the Battle for Shanghai in 1937.

His death caused an international outcry at a time of growing tension between Britain and Japan, it was consequently debated in the British parliament and the story even made the front page of the New York Times. Although he was buried with full military honours in one of the largest funerals Shanghai had ever seen, his grave was subsequently lost years later in the turmoil that swept China during the Cultural Revolution. Only through a last ditch letter to David Cameron and an incredible piece of luck was Paddy’s resting place finally rediscovered and honoured.
