Friends Who Are Going
Event description

Description

We'll meet at our “secret” venue in Brook Street, Mayfair. After a welcoming drink, we’ll go through to the private dining room to sit down and enjoy a friendly tasting of older fine and rare wines paired with delicious canapes, expertly matched to the wines by Taste Catering Co.

We’ll taste (and drink) five fine and rare wines and take your palate on an exciting journey, showing you what fine wine is and how best to enjoy it. Taste new wine and food combinations, including homemade canapes and delicious hams and cheeses, test your “blind tasting” skills, and try wines that might be older than you are. You’ll never want to drink anything but fine wine after an evening with us.

Wines served by us recently include:

Château Pape Clément red 2007
Château Pape Clément at Pessac, in suburban Bordeaux city, is the oldest documented vineyard in the region, with its first recorded vintage in 1299. The red wine of Pape Clément, a “Cru Classé” in the 1959 classification of Graves wines, is one of the most sumptuous and luxurious wines of Pessac-Léognan (which is part of Graves). Mainly cabernet sauvignon and merlot with a bit of cabernet franc, the 2007 is one of the stars of the vintage.

Château Pape Clément white 2013
There has long been a patch of white grape vines at Pape Clément but the wine from it it was not sold commercially until 1994. The grape blend is unusual for dry white Bordeaux, with a bit of aromatic muscadelle partnered with sémillon, sauvignon blanc, and sauvignon gris. The 2013 vintage is very scented, very rich, and very stylish.

Klein Constantia Vin de Constance 2000
Constantia was the first wine estate in South Africa, established in 1685 by the Governor of the Cape Simon van der Stel. After his death in 1712 the estate was divided into three: Groot Constantia, Klein Constantia and Bergvliet, the latter now just a smart suburb of Cape Town but the former still producing wine.

Jane Austen and Charles Dickens referred to Constantia wine in their novels.

It is also mentioned in E.L. James’s Fifty Shades of Grey...

FAQs

What's included in the price?

All of our events include a welcoming drink with Prosciutto; a generous glass of each fine wine (five glasses is equivalent to about 2/3 of a standard 750ml bottle – but please taste and drink responsibly); copious handmade canapes from Taste Catering Co.; and delicious cheeses from Cows & Co.

The fine and rare wines that we serve – Puligny-Montrachet rather than Prosecco – are not inexpensive but typically we're half the price of London venues that serve comparable wines... if you can find the wines at all.

A note on "dronkenesse and wrecchednesse"

We encourage you to enjoy our fine wines for the civilised pleasure that they are.

But please don’t overindulge.

“A lecherous thyng is wyn, and dronkenesse
Is ful of stryvyng and of wrecchednesse.
O dronke man, disfigured is thy face!
Sour is thy breeth, foul artow to embrace,
And thurgh thy dronke nose semeth the soun,
As though thow seydest ay, "Sampsoun! Sampsoun!"
And yet, God woot, Sampsoun drank nevere no wyn!
Thou fallest, as it were a styked swyn;
Thy tonge is lost, and al thyn honeste cure;
For dronkenesse is verray sepulture
Of mannes wit and his discrecioun,
In whom that drynke hath dominacioun.
He kan no conseil kepe, it is no drede.”

“The Pardoner’s Tale” from The Canterbury Tales

Geoffrey Chaucer (c. 1343–1400)
