Preparing for the Viva
Prof Chris Roe

In this workshop we'll discuss the purpose(s) of the viva from the different perspectives of the student, examiner and university and use these insights to help us plan the best way to prepare for your own viva. There'll be lots of opportunity to ask questions, discuss concerns and share experiences.

Following this session, PhD alumni will visit for a question and answer session on their viva experiences.

Editing and finishing your thesis
Prof. Ian Livingstone

This workshop will focus on the later stages of completing your thesis, including managing the editing process, redrafting and final completion.

Proofreading your work
Prof. Ian Livingstone and Simone Apel

Proofreading is a distinct and separate process from that of editing your thesis. It requires you to disconnect your mind from the content of your work in order to spot typographical errors, as well as grammar, style and formatting errors and inconsistences. This wokshop will introduce the principals of systematic proof-reading, examining best practise for proof reading your thesis and other work, and includes trips on what to look out for, handling common errors, using spillchickens and correcting miss steaks in grammer. Practical exercises are included to to help you to improve your proofreading skills!

Please note: The University does not offer a proofreading service - it is your responsibility to ensure your work is correct.

This workshop is open to any student currently registered on a research degree programme at the University of Northampton. Further information is available from Simone Apel (simone.apel@northampton.ac.uk; 01604 893418).
