Description

The School of Sociology and Social Policy is pleased to announce the launch of the Finkelstein Lecture Series at the University of Leeds. This annual lecture celebrates scholars working at the intersection of academia and activism in the field of equality and social justice.

Named after Vic Finkelstein, the lecture series provides a platform for scholarly activists who not only seek to better understand, but also change, the social world we live in. Vic Finkelstein embodied these principles in his own research and work as a disability campaigner, pioneer of the social model of disability and committed supporter of the anti-apartheid movement. Vic contributed towards the intellectual life of the School of Sociology and Social Policy at Leeds between 1994 and 2008 as a visiting senior research fellow. His contribution has inspired the development of this lecture series to showcase world-leading academic research that seeks to tackle inequalities and contribute towards social justice through activism and campaigning.

The first lecture will be delivered by University of East Anglia’s Professor of Disability Research, Tom Shakespeare. With research interests in disability studies, medical sociology and the social and ethical aspects of genetics, Professor Shakespeare has been highly influential in contributing towards the disabled people’s movement in the UK and internationally. Having previously been a member of Arts Council England and worked for the World Health Organisation, Professor Shakespeare has had longstanding involvement in improving public understanding of disability, as well as the policies, institutions and practices that shape its experience.

The title of Professor Shakespeare’s lecture is: “Levers of success; understanding the achievements of African people with disabilities”. This will be held on Thursday 9th November 2017 between 16:00 – 17:30 and will be followed by a wine reception courtesy of the School of Sociology and Social Policy.
