What can we really do about the climate emergency?

Sir Dieter has an amazingly clear view of our current direction - we are causing the climate crisis with our carbon intensive lifestyles, and that the measures described in the Paris Accord are not sufficient, and sometimes counterproductive. As described in his recent book, Net Zero, Oxford University economist Sir Dieter will address the action we all need to take to tackle the climate emergency: personal, local, national and global. Reducing our own carbon consumption is the first step. He will also describe what is lacking in the current framework of the Paris Accord, and how this can be fixed.

Sir Dieter will give a short overview of the topic, followed by a discussion fire side chat style, and ending with questions from the audience.

Bio Sir Dieter Helm

Sir Dieter Helm is Professor of Economic Policy at the University of Oxford and Fellow in Economics at New College, Oxford. He was Independent Chair of the Natural Capital Committee, providing advice to the government on the sustainable use of natural capital, until November 2020. In the New Year 2021 Honours List, Dieter was awarded a knighthood for services to the environment, energy and utilities policy.

He has written many books, most recently Net Zero (September 2020, William Collins) in which he addresses the action we all need to take to tackle the climate emergency. His other books include: Green & Prosperous Land (2019, William Collins), Burn Out: The Endgame for Fossil Fuels (2017), The Carbon Crunch: Revised and Updated (2015) and Natural Capital: Valuing the Planet (2016), all published by Yale University Press.

Sir Dieter has provided extensive advice to UK and European governments, including The Cost of Energy Review for the UK government in October 2017 and for the European Commission in preparing the Energy Roadmap 2030. He served both as a special advisor to the European Commissioner for Energy and as Chairman of the Ad Hoc Advisory Group on the Roadmap. He also assisted the Polish government in its presidency of the European Union Council.

Sir Dieter is Chairman of Natural Capital Research, developing natural capital models and assessments for the better use of land, and Honorary Vice President of the Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust.

Format of the Fire Side Chat

This fire side chat will be moderated by Cambridge graduate Daniel Kaute who has been working in innovation and entrepreneurship all his working life between Russia, Europe, and Canada (starting out with building Danone’s first yoghurt factory in Togliatti, Russia 1994 to 98). He currently works with a number of start-up companies on the next generation Lithium Ion battery, Internet of Things, Plastic Recycling, and the early detection of Alzheimers.
