Event description

Description

This exclusive event celebrates 20 years of Firefly International and launches The Ellie Maxwell Award.

Scottish based Charity, Firefly International was founded 20 years ago by Ellie Maxwell, a student at Edinburgh University, who having volunteered in Bosnia in the late 1990's understood the importance of creating safe environments for children to learn and thrive in the aftermath of war.

Ellie's life was cut short when she died in 2009 aged 32, of complications from cancer, but her work continues. Through her initiative, Firefly continues to thrive and grow. This event is not only to celebrate 20 years of Firefly but also to mark Ellie's extraordinary life and work by launching an annual prize in her name, to be awarded to a student at Edinburgh University pioneering innovative work in the charity sector.

Firefly at 20 is being organised by Diana McMicking, Margot Coles and Tor Crawley with a committee of students from Edinburgh University.

Your ticket to the Firefly at 20 event includes; a viewing of the spectacular light installation by artist Bruce Munro as you enter The Old Quad, then upstairs in the Playfair Library enjoy a glass of wine and two further art exhibitions by Derek Robertson and Iman Tajik. Plus words from Marjorie Lofti Gill and Amal Azzudin, music performances and the launch of The Ellie Maxwell Award.
