'Firing the Generator' - Open Weekend
Firing the Generator brings to life Loughborough’s new cultural, creative and entrepreneurial hub: 'The Generator, Loughborough (CIC)'. The project will conceive and test out the building’s future form and function at Frederick Street as it advances to become a reality.
This site has historically functioned as the home to the School of Arts, but it is about to be transformed into a hub for artists, creatives, and designers, who will interact with cultural, creative, artistic outreach and other activities within the town. For the past two years, The Generator, Loughborough (CIC), a not-for-profit initiative, has been working on this vision becoming a reality.
In order to shape, refine, and make visible the future form and function of the venue, a group of potential users will participate in a live ‘test’ of what The Generator might offer. This will take place in the last week of September during which time they will set up “camp" at the now defunct Frederick Street building and transform its main hall into a makeshift “Generator” site. Under the guidance of architects STEALTH.unlimited (Ana Džokić and Marc Neelen), the participants will devise a spatial intervention at the hall, which enables these activities to unfold. This will involve the creation of a large structure, made of an impressive amount of cardboard boxes and plywood, that accommodates an exhibition area, a stage, a field kitchen, workshop facilities and more. Creating this structure also entails creating and testing parts of the Generator’s future ambitions and possibilities, not just through drawings and designs, but through a physical engagement with the content and construct of the space - in short to “sniff out” what promises it may hold.
Once completed, we will welcome the wider public throughout the weekend of Friday 30th September to Sunday 2nd October to see a proposed model for its future operation, and to widen the discussion about the space to the community of the town. The prototype space will be animated by a full programme of performances, workshops, and events, which have been programmed by The Generator, Loughborough (CIC), details of which will be released shortly.
STEALTH.unlimited will inspire this process as part of the Market Town project run by RADAR, aimed at reviving Loughborough’s town centre towards a more vibrant, resilient future.
