Have you ever thought about applying for a Fellowship, but were unsure where to start? This interactive session will help you to cut through the guidance and critically reflect on the broader leadership skills you need to make a successful application with real-world impact.

Working with others, including successful Fellows, you will be encouraged to think about the skills and experiences you need to successfully apply for a Fellowship, and ways you can acquire the relevant skills. Areas to be covered include:

Leadership: how do you demonstrate leadership skills? How can you identify and explain ‘non-traditional’ leadership roles?
Personal training and development: How to craft a convincing training and development plan
Impact: How to create an authentic impact narrative

This will be an interactive session so please feel free to bring along a copy of your cv so you can begin to discuss through the workshop session how you can most effectively demonstrate your broader leadership skills and identify ways to potentially fill gaps.

Presenters: Kelly Montana-Williams and Lucy Williams, Strategic Project Managers, Research and Partnerships Development plus academic colleagues, Dr Anna Slater, Dr Eva Vilella-Figueras and Dr David Hughes, MRC Skills Development Fellow.

Kelly supports the development of complex, strategically important research proposals and projects across the University, in particular those aligned to the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and the broader social sciences community. Kelly acts as professional services lead for the Liverpool Digital research theme, and also supports the University’s Heritage research theme. Kelly joined Liverpool in 2017. Kelly previously worked as Faculty Research Manager in the Natural Sciences at Keele University, where she had responsibility for researcher development and support, and research and PGR administration for a diverse community of researchers ranging from social scientists to astrophysicists. Previous professional roles include strategic planning, policy and project development, executive support, business management, research and enterprise management, and financial management at Staffordshire and Keele universities. Kelly is an AdvanceHE Athena SWAN panellist and an alumni of the Aurora Women’s Leadership programme.

Lucy supports the development of large and strategically important research and training proposals across the University with a focus on Faculty of Science and Engineering. Lucy acts as professional services lead for the university Advanced Materials theme and is a member of the University Industrial Strategy Steering Group. Lucy joined the university in 2017 and previously worked at EPSRC as Head of the Building Leadership Team where she had responsibility for developing and delivering EPSRC strategy for supporting researchers in the external academic community - from PhD and fellowships through to world leading researchers. Previous roles at EPSRC included Head of Marketing and Communications and Theme Leader for Physics.

Anna took up an EPSRC-Royal Society Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowship in Dec 2016. She is based in Chemistry and the Materials Innovation Factory, and uses flow chemistry to improve the materials discovery process.

Eva has recently been awarded a prestigious Future Leaders Fellowship from UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). Eva is an electronic engineer and internationally recognized expert on CMOS sensor design. She received her PhD from the University of Barcelona in 2013 and has been with the Department of Physics at Liverpool since 2014. Her work focuses on the R&D of advanced silicon sensors for particle physics experiments, including the Large Hadron Collider at CERN and mu3e. She also works for the CERN-RD50 collaboration, where she is the overall lead for generic R&D of CMOS sensors. Under her Future Leaders Fellowship, Eva will work on the long-term R&D of CMOS sensors to address the challenges of future fundamental physics experiments and achieve applications in other fields like proton therapy for cancer treatment.

David is currently a UKRI Innovation Fellow funded by the MRC, investigating variational approximations in longitudinal data analysis. His research involves approximate computationally efficient methods of estimating mixed models for multivariate longitudinal data, and he also works on jointly modelling longitudinal and survival data. Most of this work is focused on clinical risk prediction methods, and covers applications involving diabetes, epilepsy and liver cancer.

Impact Clusters: Making an Impact on Society; Making an Impact on the Environment or Quality of Life; Making an Impact on Culture; Making an Impact in Health; Making an Impact on Public Policy or Services; Making an Impact on the Economy; Making an Impact beyond Academia - Fellowships generally require candidates to demonstrate a range of research impacts, specific to the proposed project. During our session, we will ask participants to reflect on how their skills and experience could be employed to develop a convincing impact plan.

Knowledge and Skills Axis: Research partnerships; Working with business; Working with the public and third sector; Skills, enterprise and entrepreneurship; Local growth and regeneration; IP and commercialisation; Public and community engagement - Although Fellowships are awards for an outstanding individual, the research programme can include working with partners; engaging with the public and policymakers; and generating IP. As part of the reflective practice element of the session, participants will consider how prior experience of working in these areas can be described in a funding application.
