About this event

LEAPS, in partnership with SCAPP, are pleased to share the following Webinar:

First in Family as an indicator of Widening Participation in university

with Dr Morag Henderson (UCL Institute of Education)

In this LEAPS webinar, Dr Morag Henderson will give a presentation on her paper 'Is First in Family a good indicator for widening university participation’, which uses longitudinal data from England to analyse whether FIF is a good indicator of disadvantage, over and above other sources widening participation (WP) indicators. This paper and presentation will provide a springboard for a discussion between attendees.

As with previous LEAPS seminars, this session is intended to help bridge the gap between research and practice in the WP sector, create dialogue informed by academic analysis and observation, and generate ideas across the practitioner community to meet the challenges under consideration.

Event Details:

When: Thursday 24th June 3:00 - 4:30pm

Where: Online Webinar

Format: Presentation of paper from Dr Morag Henderson, followed by digital breakout groups and discussion. We ask that participants read the paper prior to the event (details below), and come prepared for discussion.

Who is this for: Practitioners and academics working in (or with an interest in) Widening Participation projects. Current university students are also welcome to attend.

This event is delivered in partnership with SCAPP and supports SCAPPs objectives for practitioners (training and development, evaluation and research, quality standards and networking).

We ask that attendees read the paper under discussion before attending:

Is First in Family a Good Indicator for Widening University Participation

Adamecz-Volgyi, A., Henderson, M., Shure, N. (2020). Is ‘first in family’ a good indicator for widening university participation? [online]. Economics of Education Review, Volume 78, DOI: 10.1016/j.econedurev.2020.102038

Please note: You are able to access and download the paper for free through your institutional login by clicking the link at the top of the webpage.

If you encounter issues accessing this, or do not have an institutional login, please email laura.kwiatkowski@ed.ac.uk who can send you the article directly (with permission from Dr Henderson)

Please also consider the following questions in advance of the webinar:

  • How might the results of this paper impact on the work of WP practitioners with students?
  • What implications might these results have for WP policy? Both at a project/institutional level, and also a broader regional or national policy level?

We will be discussing these points during the session.

Please register to receive event joining details.

We look forward to seeing you at this online event.
