Event Details

Make Food is a new and exciting provider of classes that teach children practical cooking skills and essential food knowledge to empower them to eat food that’s better for them and the environment.

This summer we’re hosting two fantastic Fish Cookery Classes at Classroom on the Coast. These workshops will celebrate the fantastic local fish on offer in Hastings with flavourful, seasonal and simple recipes that can be incorporated into your weekday dinners.

Wednesday 31st August: Fish Fiesta

Bring some Mexican flair to your fish suppers and learn how to make Summer Fish Tacos with Sweetcorn Salsa and Homemade Tortillas. This recipe celebrates all that is wonderful about Summer with local seasonal ingredients brought together for a fun dish that everyone can put their own stamp on.

During the workshop you will cook this dish, have a short tour of Rock-a-Nore’s fishing huts and have time at the end to enjoy what you’ve made together.

The cost of the workshops includes all ingredients, materials, a container to take any leftovers home and a recipe card so you can cook the dish again at home.

As they are cooking-based these workshops are best suited for children aged 5 and upwards, though it's completely up to families of younger children if they would like to attend and we're sure smaller children will still enjoy the session.

These Summer Classes at Classroom on the Coast have been devised to help celebrate the wonderful local haul of fish available in Hastings however the recipe can be adapted to suit vegetarians. The chapatis can also be made with gluten free flour. If you have any food intolerances or specifications, just let us know when booking or email kate@make-food.org

PLEASE NOTE: Unfortunately, our classes may be subject to cancellation if we do not fufil the required bookings to host the event. In any event of cancellation we will seek to give you at least 3 days notice and you will be refunded fully.

The workshop will be delivered by Kate Rintoul, founder of Make Food, a new organisation that teaches children and families practical cookery skills and food knowledge through engaging classes and experiences.

Having worked in both the food industry and in education for over 12 years, Kate set up Make Food with the support of the Prince’s Trust in 2015 , to provide opportunities for children and families to learn more about food and to practice new skills so that can help make family meals more enjoyable and healthy.
