Cathy Mansell, Principal Trainer, The Personal Fitness Company
I set up The Personal Fitness Company in September 2010. Today the business supports the fitness and wellbeing goals and needs of nearly 800 people face to face, and over 4000 members online. During this time, and working with both private and corporate clients, I have been continually amazed by the positive impact taking control of one’s own physical health and fitness can have upon a whole range of attributes - from self-esteem and confidence, to prioritisation and empowerment, the list goes on. Improve and strengthen any one of these areas and you can very quickly see positive change both at work and at home. I have seen time and time again how the physical is entwined with the psychological and the emotional.
Prior to launching my own business, I worked for 17 years in the very fast moving corporate environment of field sales at Yell plc. I worked my way from field sales representative, through the ranks, to Area Field Sales Manager. Responsible for around 45 consultants and 5 managers, I feel I have valuable first-hand experience of the challenges that face most of my private and corporate clients today. This knowledge undoubtedly helps me understand and facilitate better their endeavours to take control of their lifestyle and prioritise their needs.
During my time at Yell I was responsible for the training and development of potential first and second line managers, and exceptional sales people. I was EQA regional champion as the business went through the process of competing for and winning that award in 2004 in the large business category. Responsible for the engagement and morale of my people, and facilitating the right environment for those people to flourish, my department posted regional best employee satisfaction scores, whilst at the same time, delivering National best business results. I feel that I am incredibly fortunate in my current work to have experienced and come to fully appreciate that the best results in whatever field come from a fully engaged, motivated and valued individual or workforce.
Amongst its corporate clients, The Personal Fitness Company delivers the wellbeing programme at Capital One Bank in Nottingham. I consult with employees, offer relevant fitness and wellbeing services, set up health stations and business focussed and National events - anti natal classes, posture events, and national men’s week for example. Probably our best testimonial comes the contribution my company has made to their winning the prestigious “Great Place To Work” award in both 2013 and 2014.
Working with Epic Partners and Nottingham City Homes, I have designed and implemented sessions that offer fitness and nutrition support aimed at women in deprived areas, often living in very difficult circumstances. Engaging with and gaining trust from these women has been one of my greatest challenges. Yet I continue to see many members significantly change the lifestyle and quality of life for themselves and their whole family. One of my greatest successes has been to see several women embark upon and complete their own training as fitness professionals.
