Dreams of a Life - Carol Morley (2011)

The starting point of this part dramatized documentary was a brief news item that the director came across in 2006 and couldn’t forget. The remains of Joyce Carol Vincent were found in her flat in Wood Green, North London, having been undiscovered for three years. Through interviews with friends, acquaintances and family members, Morley offers us a speculative and imaginative retelling of the life of this woman through the eyes of those whose path she crossed. It is a film about urban lives, dreams, loneliness, and the depth and elusiveness of connection.(94 minutes)

White Flags - Caroline Rooney and Rita Sakr (2014)

Introduced by one of the film directors Caroline Rooney

Based on extensive fieldwork and research in Lebanon, this film conceptually and artistically explores how trust could be rebuilt in the wake of conflictual post war memory, ongoing ideological and sectarian divisions and deep socio-economic problems. Introducing the viewer to individuals and organisations who have actively participated in rebuilding trust amidst ongoing crises, it features interviews with psychoanalyst Chawki Azouri, journalist Jeanine Jalkh, president of ‘Memory for the Future’ association Amal Makarem, artist/urban planner Raouf Rifai and dancer/theatre director Aurelien Zouki.(50 minutes)

I am Not Your Negro - Raoul Peck (2016)

This film is a documentary and timely social critique film essay based on James Baldwin’s unfinished manuscript Remember this House. It explores race and racism through Baldwin’s evocative and incendiary words, and retells the lives and assassinations of Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr and Medgar Evers. (93 minutes)
