About this event

  • 2 hours

Remnants of bygone advertising, for bygone brands and businesses, are still visible today, clinging to the walls above our busy streets.

Today, the Fitzrovia area is mostly offices and residential, but look above street level to see hints of history that show us how these streets were previously home to a diverse range of trades and services.

Most of the signs we will look at were hand-painted directly onto walls, but there are other interesting types such as the lovely mosaic shown here and we'll also look at names and logos embedded within masonry or cast into metal.

Learn about the companies and products behind the signs. Specifically, hear about this area's manufacturing history, visible in signs for homewares, fashion and furniture, as well as antiques, printing, postage and plumbing.

......................................

  • The walk lasts approx two hours, starting near Goodge Street station and ending at the southern end of Charlotte Street (a short walk to Tottenham Court Rd station).
  • The specific meeting place will be clearly described in words at the bottom of your ticket which will be sent via email after purchase.

......................................

My guiding style is inclusive, open and friendly. I design and research every tour myself – in fact, the research never ends. The walks and talks I offer are all on subjects that intrigue me and each one highlights a different facet of my personality. I am particularly interested in the architecture of our ever-changing streets and the little details on and above them. For more information, please visit www.janeslondonwalks.com

I have lived in Islington, North London simce 1988 and have been facscinated by the area's history. The unusual details on, above and along London's streets impelled me to start a blog www.janeslondon.com and this, in turn, evolved into the touring arm of www.janeslondonwalks.com

There is, as they say, so much out there hiding in plain sight.
