Domestic abuse experts Madeline Mc Aleer, Danielle Roberts, Helen Crickard and Noelle Collins examine the destructive impact of coercive control and discuss ‘Five Books That Could Save Your Life’ with Sarah Harte, Irish Examiner columnist.
The panel examines why victims of coercive control find themselves trapped in ‘invisible chains’, explores ‘dangerous relationships and how they end in murder’ and considers barriers to recognising and responding to coercive control. They discuss why a radical new all-island approach is essential to eliminate domestic, sexual and gender-based abuse from our society.
This project is coordinated by Haven Horizons in partnership with Reclaim the Agenda and Belfast & Lisburn Women’s Aid.
The five books include Remembered Forever, by Luke and Ryan Hart, whose mother and sister were murdered by their father in a domestic homicide; Brutally Honest, by Spice Girl and coercive control survivor Mel B; Invisible Chains, by psychologist Dr Lisa Aronson Fontes, In Control by Professor Jane Monckton Smith, a criminologist and former UK police officer, and What is to be Done About Violence Against Women by Professors Kate Fitz-Gibbon and Sandra Walklate, experts in the field of domestic abuse.
This project is supported by the Shared Island Civic Society Fund, Department of Foreign Affairs.
