About this event

To avoid confusion, this is a booking to fix your own bike. If you want a mechanic to do it for you, please book a Bike Safety Check, Repair, and/or Service.

Women and non-binary folk only? Is this forever?

We are trialling sessions that are demographic-specific on selected days, but our open-to-all sessions are still running. Please note that while the session is restricted to participants of specific demographics, volunteers of all genders will be assisting.

How to book

When you book your ticket on Eventbrite, please also complete the survey questions, so we know what time you intend to arrive and what needs done on your bike.

This helps us gauge how much time you will need, and it also helps with planning volunteer numbers.

If you have any queries, or would like to give us more information, please drop us an email: weespokehub@shrubcoop.org

Details

Join us on Tuesday evenings (17:00-20:00) for a Bike-DIY session, and fix your own bike!

£6 per hour for the use of a stable bike stand, in a warm, dry, well-lit space.

Wee Spoke Hub tools are available for your use. We also have spare parts (new and used) for sale, and mechanical assistance from our Wee Spoke Hub volunteers, backed up by a workshop mechanic.

Suggestions

Wear old clothes - if you're lucky, you'll get them greasy. If you forget, we do have aprons, and a few old shirts. Also extremely fashionable lab coats!

If you have another appointment later in the evening (i.e. a deadline), please let us know about this when you sign in. Things take longer than you think.

After signing in, you will be matched with a volunteer. We'll discuss your repair needs, the available time, and try to gauge your mechanical comfort zone.

Then get your hands dirty. 😇

Practical limitations

Bike-DIY depends on our selfless volunteers. If there is no spare volunteer available when you arrive, please be patient.

Some advanced repairs are not practical during Bike-DIY.

So before you lug over your full-bounce chipped e-bike with the pure mad shockies and the CD waterbrakes for a full electric afterburner overhaul - please drop us an email to see if that's possible. 😅

Frequently asked questions

What about the unrestricted Bike-DIY sessions, what's happened to them?

The open workshop (Bike-DIY) is still going on Thursdays, thanks for asking. We won't stop our most popular thing. :) For a number of reasons (staffing, volunteer numbers, funding, fair play) we are opening our workshop on Tuesdays to try out demographic-specific sessions.

I don't fit this demographic, and I need to fix my bike - what about meeee?

We ask politely that participants respect our experiment. We're trying out something, and if it is successful, we want to expand our focus. With sufficient demand, we might even have exclusive sessions for other demographics (including wheelchair users!) Please email us to express interest.

Who will be available to assist me?

Every participant is assigned a volunteer, who will either be able to help you themselves, or act as liaison to the mechanics. If no volunteer is available, you may be asked to wait. Note that volunteers in all sessions may identify as any gender.

What if I'm late (or early)?

We work in a small space, so we may have to ask you to wait.

Organised by

We are an Edinburgh-based bike shop with a difference! We are an active travel advocacy hub - we want better cycling skills for the Edinburgh community, to equip people with the skills to repair and maintain their own bike, for cycling to be more accessible to people from all walks of life, and to have better cycling infrastructure in the city. We also want all of this to happen without it costing the Earth!
