LEARN - You fix your own bike, we help

Riding a bike in Sheffield is a great way to get around quickly, fit some exercise into your day and enjoy the great outdoors. It can be daunting if something unexpected happens on your ride, particularly if you feel like you haven't got the kit or experience to fix your bike and get rolling again. It can be tricky to get your bike booked in at a professional workshop to be fixed. Thankfully, there are heaps of repairs you can make to your own bike; these are quick, cheap and easy to do if you have the right tools and know what you are doing. This event is funded by the Big Bike Revival and is completely free to you.

Join us at Stannington Pavilion (in Stannington park) for a hands-on event where you can learn how to fix your own bike. Whether it's a flat tire, wonky brakes, or a squeaky chain, our experts will be there to guide you through the process and help. Bring your bike and let's get our hands dirty together. No need to be a pro, just come with a willingness to learn and have fun. Don't miss out on this opportunity to become your own bike mechanic!

All tools and spares are provided. You will benefit most if you bring your own bike, but let the instructor know if you need to borrow one. The instructor is a Cytech level 3 technician with 13 years of experience in the industry. We have six stands so it's a great chance to meet other folk using their bikes in your community. There are even free refeshments to keep you spannerin'.

The event timings are 13.00 to 16.00. You can come for as little or as long as you like. If demand is high, we may be in touch to organise a time for you to come to make sure everyone gets access to a stand when they arrive.

Frequently asked questions

Can I bring my own tools?

Great idea! If you train with the tools you work with (whether they are trailside/roadside tools or workshop tools) then you'll be more familiar when you practice your repairs at home. If you don't have your own tools, we have plenty to lend you.

Is the venue Accessible?

There is ramp access into the building although some doorways can be narrow. Happy to arrange a viewing of the venue to meet adaptations.

What refreshments are there?

Our technician's favourite biscuits are chocolate hobnobs, so it'll be something like that! We supply semi-skimmed milk, Yorkshire tea and caff/decaff instant coffee. Let us know if you have any requirements and we'll do our best to provide.

Will my bike be checked before I leave?

Our technician will oversee any adjustments you make so your bike is safe before you leave.

Can I borrow a bike?

It's best to use your own bike so you get a better understanding of it. However, if you need to borrow a bike (eg. you're struggling to get your bike to the event, we can lend you one to practice on).

The repairs I want to learn aren't listed. What's up with that?

We can help you with most running repairs on most bikes. We can't help with electrical issues on eBikes, but they usually share common gears and brakes so lets work on those. Please don't bring e-scooters or electric motorcycles.

How are the places allocated?

Events are offered on a first come, first served basis. If events are full, send the Facebook group a message and we'll add you to a waiting list. If you can't attend then please let us know as soon as possible. Please only book if you intend to come along.

How come this is free?

These events are fully funded by Cycling UK through their Big Bike Revival project. These are offered to you free of charge with a view to trying to increase or diversify the way you use your bike.

What is the parking like?

The community centre is situated within the park, there is a car park adjoining. Please consider travelling sustainably to the event if possible.
