About this event

This virtual event, jointly hosted with the Centre for Sexuality, Race and Gender Justice (SeRGJ) at the University of Kent, marks the launch of a special issue of feminists@law on "The Future of Legal Gender: Exploring the Feminist Politics of Decertification".

This panel discussion with Davina Cooper, Emily Grabham, Elizabeth Peel, Flora Renz, Robyn Emerton and Han Newman will discuss prominent contemporary questions on the feminist politics of sex and gender, drawing on our recently published special issue.

Key questions to explore

• what would be the implications in Britain, for feminism, of no longer having a legal sex registered at birth?

• could single-sex provision continue with loose and porous categories?

• do wider publics want the law reformed?

• is gender-neutral legislation beneficial; and what might it look like?

• are there feminist risks in treating gender as a private aspect of selfhood?

The special issue is based on research conducted as part of the Future of Legal Gender project. This ESRC-funded project started in 2018 and is led by Professor Davina Cooper, King’s College London.

The event will open with an introduction to the project followed by brief presentations of the articles. We then invite comments, questions, and discussion from participants.

This is an open event. We strongly encourage those attending to read the introduction to the special issue beforehand, as well as any papers you would like to comment on in the discussion.

Instructions and the link for joining this event by Zoom will be made available to registered participants nearer the date.
