About this event
José Vargas Fernández, known as Pepe de Joaquina 'El Faraón' , is a well known flamenco singer in his home town of Jerez de la Frontera. After many years on the flamenco scene and several hit flamenco songs to his name, he has released a new album, 'Orgullo de Faraón', which he presents in this unique London concert with the acclaimed guitarist Pepe del Morao.
Pepe de Joaquina (Jerez, 1954) is often known by his stage name, 'El Farajón'. In his songs, he frequently pays homage to the many great flamenco figures of Jerez. He draws heavily on the work of Antonio Gallardo Molina, the gypsy poet and composer of many great flamenco letras (lyrics) and creator of the legendary Los Faraónes (Pharoes) flamenco ensemble. Pepe was a part of Los Faraónes when they were resident at Madrid's famous Las Canasteros flamenco venue during the 1970s. He has performed at all the major flamenco festivals, including Fiesta de la Bulería and has supported many of the major flamenco groups of Jerez. His recent 'La Mora' single and video was very well received in Spain, playing tribute to all the great flamencos from his native Andalucía. In the 1990s Pepe performed in London at many flamenco venues of the capital, including regular spots at Peña Flamenca de Londres.
Pepe del Morao, who will accompany Pepe de Joaquina, is a member of the famous Morao dynasty of great flamenco guitarists. Pepe del Morao was born in Jerez de la Frontera in 1985 and is the grandson of Manuel Morao, one of the greatest flamenco guitarists of all time and the nephew of the late Moraíto Chico and cousin of guitarist Diego del Morao. Pepe learned from his grandfather and began his career his grandfather's famous group, Los Gitanos de Jerez. In recent years he has worked with the dance company of Antonio el Pipa as well as the best flamenco singers in Jerez such as Luís el Zambo, Jose Mercé, Diego el Cigala, Diego Agujetas, La Macanita and, of course, Pepe de Joaquina. Pepe del Morao has also produced and directed major shows and events around Spain. His recordings include albums include Molchibe Calli (Christmas music) and supports Pepe de Joaquina on a new album to be released in July.
Also appearing will be Tito Heredia on guitar, with up-and-coming flamenco dancer Alba Heredia Villalobos and popular flamenco singer Jasmine Villalobos, all regulars at the Peña Flamenca de Londres over the years and always very popular with our audiences.
