Description

Welcome to Flavour SenseNation. Thanks to funding from the Wellcome Trust, we've been uncovering the hidden science behind our appreciation of food and flavour since 2011. Our project explores the often surprising ways in which our senses guide our food choices and dining habits. It also gives an insight into how these choices can affect our health - and our environment. Science engagement is what we do and we like to do it ways that are creative, informative and fun.

FSN have taken a fresh look at teaching resources for Primary Science and the result is a suite of online resource sheets and kits designed for use in conjunction with the activities. Taken together these comprise the basis for a range of highly practical sensory experiments that explore flavour and its perception.

These classroom-tested resources provide the catalyst for participatory learning, encouraging children not only to explore their own imaginative and experiential responses but to share those responses with their peers, giving rise to spontaneous, pupil-led discussion, debate and genuine scientific enquiry.

FSN has successfully managed a programme for volunteer science communicators who have worked with us at exhibitions and events. Our recent Junior Researcher Programme – an outreach project enabling under- and post-graduate students to work with schools to develop and deliver science projects using our resources – has led us to realize the value of equipping these vibrant ‘science ambassadors’ with activities to take directly into the classroom. Consequently, children and teaching staff get to meet a ‘bona fide’ scientist conducting ‘real’ science before their very eyes; and having some honest-to-goodness fun at the same time.

Our free training session is available for STEM Ambassadors and Primary School Teachers based in London. We hope you can take part in a workshop that will supply you with the resources, the equipment and the knowledge that you would need to take into a live classroom. Oh, and did we mention that it’s fun?
