Event description

Description

Trace the route of the buried River Fleet from Hampstead Heath to Blackfriars.

We will be walking the route of the lost River Fleet form one of its many sources on Hampstead Heath near Kenwood House (named after the old Caen Wood meaning Green Wood), down past Kentish Town (named after Caen Ditch, or Green Ditch), Camden Town and the Old Mother Red Cap (now the Worlds End), through St Pancras (the oldest site of Christain worship in the UK and possibly a site of Temples to Apollo and Elen), Kings Cross (once known as Battle Bridge) down through Farringdon, Clerkenwell and Holborn to Blackfriars Bridge.

The Fleet River was once a sacred river full of healing wells, but as London expanded it became clogged with silt and refuse, and its descriptions developed into a stinking ditch, and then a sewer. The river now runs below London encased in piping as the Fleet sewer, most of the flow is redirected to the Hackney Marshes

The Fleet River Walk is an open invitation to engage with the world through story; to enter into a storied landscape and connect with the layers of history, ritual and myth lying beneath our feet. This is a process of singing and weaving ancient stories into our contemporary environment, of connecting to and falling in love with the world around us.

As part of our walk we will take a little water from the source of the Fleet down to the Thames; please bring a small watertight container to carry your piece of the Fleet.

We will be meeting at Kenwood Cafe at 11am and we will finish at Blackfriars Bridge at 5pm. We will be walking all day bar a lunch stop, while this is mostly downhill please ensure you are comfortable walking 8 miles and wearing suitable clothing, we will be on our feet and outside all day - dress for the weather and bring suncream or an anorak as appropriate.

This walk is a part of a larger project called mythically imagining kings cross, you can find more information here: https://mythmapkx.tumblr.com/ or by following #mythmapkx on social media.
