Contemporary Dance, Physical Theatre & Live Art Workshop Intensive

Studio Bizz, 551 Mont-Royal Avenue East, 3rd floor, Montréal, Québec, H2J 1W6

Saturday 11th November 2017 - 11:30am - 5pm

Sunday 12th November 2017 - 10am - 6pm

1 Day - $110 // 2 Days - $200 (excluding booking fees)

This workshop is available to all types of creatives interested in using/developing the physical body including, but not limited to: dancers, circus artist, actors, musicians, fine artists, theatre directors, martial artists, live artist, yogis, and anyone else interested in developing their own personal, and artistic practise.

This two day intensive will commence each day with a group introduction to communicate a selfawareness of each individual’s current states of being to create an open, safe and respectful habitat before progressing to an in-depth approach to the fundamental techniques of Joss’ distinctive training, choreographic and performance methodologies, and life ideologies.

Joss Carter’s ‘FLESH & BONE’ practise focuses on exhausting the body through self disciplined technical and creative concepts that aim to construct, demolish and distort the anatomy in a radical approach to primitive, classical and contemporary movement, emotion & theatricality. Through the use of imagery we will explore the beauty within the grotesque, discovering vibrations in the body, expanding & shrinking the kinesphere, and the extremes in tension and relaxation energised by a conscious breath.

Joss’ classes aims are based around a social anarchism, empowering individualism and aiming to strip the ego to enhance the mental, physical and spiritual health of each participant.

This class will naturally evolve into the conceptual and choreographic explorations of Joss’ creative processes including but not limited to:

The discovery of anatomical distortions and obscurities. Purification Loops. Falling and impact protection.  Structured theatrical improvisations with the use of physical imagery. Group creation of set material/repertoire. Choreographic tasks and experiments. Self analysis, observations, and group discussions.

Self discipline, sacrifice, purging and mortification of the physical and mental being is vital to not only expand artistic identity, but to also infiltrate and educate the wellbeing and dexterity of each individual. Through a non judgemental, honest, caring, sensitive and intimate environment we shall recognise the importance of independence, camaraderie, self contemplation and social congregation.

“I am intrigued by the growth and decay of life and death, the clarity and distortion of anatomy and psychology, the physical and emotional expression/suppression of senses and states. I constantly taunt, confront and overcome selfish and selfless thresholds to reveal the beauty and honesty within the grotesque. My work is a provoking and controversial surreal hyper-realism that challenges the histories, beliefs, cultures, fantasies, trauma’s and tragedies of humanity through contemporary dance, theatre, live art, sound and set design. Through the disruption of physical and mental states of my being, the audience become transcended through a cathartic journey of visceral concepts and an awakening of the senses, allowing the questioning and consideration of ones own purpose/existence.”

Joss graduated from the Northern School of Contemporary Dance, UK in 2010.
