This walk tackles the question of how did they local population of Britain feed itself over the millenia.

When the Romans arrived it made a huge impact on the daily diet and many of the things we enjoy today derive from that period. They left, and the rabbits went with them - back to one pot cooking! 

Foreign merchants trading in Roman Londonium brought expensive spices to our shores, why did the Worshipful Company of Grocers become so rich? Well they were once the Guild of Pepperers, so there's a clue. 

During what is often called the Dark Ages became one of the greatest periods of culinary expertise, huge extravagant feasts prepared for hundreds, puddings galore and the roasted swan complete with feathers also the rise of the 'celebrity chef' - this is not a new idea. 

Where did the poor man get his food? Kitchens did not exist except for the wealthy, foods stalls and street cryers in abundance fed the great City over hundreds of years.

Why did a servant request in his contract not to be fed only on oysters? We'd be so lucky!

When were fish sold in Bread Street and what is the origin of the 'Bakers Dozen?' The street names also give a many a clue as to what was being bought and sold in a particular area.

So many interesting questions most of which have a simple answer and I am delighted to take you on a ramble through the streets of the City to discover many interesting food facts of days gone by.


Start St Paul's Underground Station (outside Cafe Nero) and ends on London Bridge (Station and Underground). Ideal to visit  Borough Market the nearest thing we have today to a Medieval marketplace.
