Event description

Description

An evening of spoken word, music and provocations, in association with the Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival.

Flint & Pitch brings together 5 diverse acts to creatively respond to the theme 'Reclaim This Script.' Can 'reclaiming' slurs bring empowerment? How best to change dominant narratives about the causes of ill mental health? How can we have better conversations about this, in life and through creative works? Come hear these broad themes explored in a night of poetry, song and more.

Featuring Janice Galloway, Vonny Leclerc, Marc Rooney (Pronto Mama), Maud The Moth and introducing Ross McFarlane. Hosted by Sian Bevan & Jenny Lindsay.

More on the acts below!

Janice Galloway is a writer of award-winning fiction, non-fiction and texts for folk who work in other art forms. Her first novel, The Trick is to keep Breathing, is now available in Vintage Classic edition. Her last full-length book, All Made Up, won Creative Scotland Best Book of the Year and the Creative Scotland Literature Award. Jellyfish, a collection of new short stories, was launched at the Edinburgh Festival in 2015. She lives in Lanarkshire with Jonathan (husband) Alison (top mate), six hens (last time I counted) and a very assertive cat (Josephine Baker to her friends).

VONNY LECLERC

Vonny is an Edinburgh-based columnist and feminist. She writes public interest pieces on gender, politics and mental health. She's an activist for Nordic Model Now! and was shortlisted for a 2016 Write to End Violence Against Women Awards.

MARC ROONEY

Singer songwriter Marc Rooney is a member of the incredible band, Pronto Mama. Pronto Mama are a past post-modern bug-eyed beatnik group from Glasgow who are just as confused as anyone else. They are soulful. They believe irreverent wordplay, clean musicianship and a dirty dedication to song-writing is how you do it. Come hear Marc in a bespoke solo set!

MAUD THE MOTH

Maud the Moth was founded as the solo project of the singer and pianist Amaya López-C. Hailing from Madrid, and cycling through various line-ups, she now partners up with Paúl González on drums to expand its heartfelt musical universe, which draws on a wide-ranging musical background including jazz, classical, avant garde, soul and even some elements of metal.

And introducing...

ROSS MCFARLANE

Ross McFarlane - Headshot.jpg

Ross McFarlane is a punk-influenced, high energy poet. He has performed in the Scottish and UK National Poetry Slams, theatres up and down the country and what feels like every basement in Glasgow. Ross has supported artists such as Rae Spoon, Riot Grrrl, and Throw Me Off A Bridge. His poem “Continue...9” was featured in Josephine Sillar’s acclaimed show “Ripped From The Wire Spine”, and he was part of the Fringe 2017 with ‘A Matter of Time’ alongside fellow poet/performers Ellen Renton, Bibi June and Shannon McGregor.

Hosted by

SIAN BEVAN AND JENNY LINDSAY

Co-hosts of the groundbreaking Lyceum Variety Nights, Bevan and Lindsay team up again! Sian Bevan is a consummate compere, comedian and speaker of words, well-kent as one of the best comperes in town! Jenny Lindsay is the director of Flint & Pitch Productions and a spoken word poet of a ridiculous number of years that she often tries, successfully, to forget. Expect warmth and wit a-plenty as they introduce the wonders above!
