Event description
How can we integrate approaches to improve Flood Risk Management?

About this event

It is becoming more accepted that using engineered flood risk management (FRM) measures alone is not the only solution to reduce flood risk. This conference will discuss integrated approaches to FRM which have been used to reduce flood risk and increase community flood resilience to create a more sustainable outcomes.

The Multi-layered safety (MLS) approach is a key theme of the conference. The MLS concept integrates engineered measures for flood risk management with spatial planning, emergency response and resilient recovery. The concept has been applied to pilots around the North Sea region under the EU INTERREG FRAMES project, which includes sites within the UK (https://northsearegion.eu/frames/). Although such principles are being acknowledged in an international setting, they have not yet been discussed in detail in the UK.

The Trent Rivers Trust's pilot project investigating the MLS approach relates to Natural Flood Management (NFM). Findings from international FRAMES pilots will be discussed to assess if the MLS concept could be applied wider within the UK and inform sustainable Flood Risk Management during the next decade and beyond.

The themes of this one day conference include; Integrated Flood Risk Management, Creating Multiple Benefits through FRM and Community Resilience.

Speakers are confirmed from the Environment Agency, Sheffield Hallam University, BGI Nottingham and iCASP Group based at the University of Leeds.

Lunch is included.

This conference has been supported by the EU Regional Development Fund: North Sea Region.
