Join knit designer Nicki Merrall at The Refectory Table to learn how to achieve a professional fully-fashioned knit finish and embellishment techniques, through creating a floral themed sampler with knitted flowers and leaves.
The day covers fully-fashioned shaping; blocking; appliqué with knit; embroidery on knit and adapting basic patterns.
Nicki will support you as you design a small artwork, knit the petals and leaves, block them, appliqué them to a knitted background and embellish them with embroidery. These skills are simple, anyone who can knit, purl and rib will be able to take part and enjoy the creative process.
You will learn how to confidently work mirrored increases and decreases as used to achieve a professional finish in fully-fashioned knitwear.
The skills gained from this workshop can be used again and again when knitting any garment or accessory that requires shaping, to create a larger knitted artwork or to embellish existing knitted garments, accessories or home ware.
Venue & What's Included
The workshop includes:
- Designer’s ‘show and tell’ using Nicki's own designs, swatches and knitting books.
- Creating a 15x 15cm artwork using fully-fashioned shaping; blocking; appliqué with knit; embroidery on knit.
- All materials, tools, a worksheet explaining techniques.
- You’ll be well looked after with refreshments all day, a home cooked two-course lunch (we cater to all dietary needs) and home baked cake before the final session, and leave with a goodie bag full of treats.
This workshop is for a maximum of 8 people and suitable for anyone who can knit, purl and rib.

About the Tutor - Nicki Merrall
Nicki Merrall is a knit designer based in Leicestershire. She designs and writes patterns for garments and accessories, usually using British wools. Nicki self-publishes some patterns and others are commissioned by magazines. Her main inspirations are modern quilt artists using fabric manipulation and stitch, traditional textiles, botany and architecture, plus the use of colour by the knitwear designers: Missoni, Kaffe Fasset and Alice Starmore.
