Event description

Description

Cost includes all materials and yummy homemade refreshments

Spaces are limited to 6. (We need 4 people to run this workshop)

Michaela will talk to us about her own work, then guide us through the possibilities of how to embellish our own object. We will have the opportunity to:

  • Revamp an old toy animal to create your own customised version
  • Embellish with floral components, unwanted treasures and found objects
  • Use paint, decoupage, and gold leaf applied to the toy.
  • Investigate attaching, different glues, working small, valuing discarded objects, piecing together to give a new purpose/life
  • Drill into the object, wrap and stitch to attach decoration

There will be a selection of toy animals to choose from, or you may bring your own!

Michaela McMillan

Storytelling in a sculptural form is at the heart of my practice, collaging together memories, facts and fiction. The narrative flows through highly coloured and layered bases into a mixed media and found object assemblage, often preserved in glass domes.

My collections are feminine, figurative, curious, shrine-like, and often feature animals and nature. I have a joyful exuberance of connecting the fragility of natural materials like flowers and feathers, with the imperfections and irregularities of broken and discarded objects.

Themes of my work combine imagined stories with a concern over materials which physically last a long time but are treated as disposable items in today’s society.

With a background in embroidery, my work tends to be intricate, ornate and emotional. www.michaela mcmillan.com
