Event description

logoFlourishing in Adversity:

A Lamp in the Darkness

A multidisciplinary conference hosted by the Human Values in Healthcare Forum

Finding zest for life in difficult times

How can we lead the ‘the good life’ as healthcare practitioners, patients or citizens? And what does ‘the Good’ mean in this neo-liberal age dominated by austerity, inequality and consumerism?

You will be invited to consider thought provoking alternatives – from ancient wisdom to modern science – to the ways we can flourish in the 21st century.

There will be the opportunity to reflect upon and discuss challenging questions set by the speakers in
small facilitated groups.

In this conference we are fortunate to have internationally renowned visionary speakers who will offer a
rich and multifaceted view of flourishing and guide us on how we can develop and cultivate wellbeing in
our lives and communities.

MARK VERNON, journalist, philosopher and author of Wellbeing and The Good Life

OLIVER JAMES, psychologist and author of bestselling Affluenza, Britain on the Couch and Contented Dementia

HAZEL STUTELEY OBE, community champion and National Executive, NHS Alliance

DR TIM DARTINGTON, author of Managing Vulnerability – the Underlying Dynamics of Systems of Care

ANYA DE LONGH, Patient Leader

VALERIE ILES, thought leader and author of Why Reforming the NHS Doesn’t Work

PETER TOON, General Practitioner

This conference is partnered with the Think about Health Network residential conference Flourishing in Difficult Times June 19th- 20th at the Woodbrooke Study Centre, Birmingham.
