Event description

Description

Some of Morecambe Bay's limestone hills are clothed in wildflowers which many are familiar with, such as on Whitbarrow Scar and Humphrey Head. However, there are also smaller areas of flower-rich grassland which help to link up these larger areas but are less well-known or understood. Morecambe Bay Partnership is looking for volunteers to help gather information about these places and get to know their true value so that we can work with landowners to conserve them.

We will be training volunteers on the ecology of limestone grassland, and most importantly identifying wildflowers and some grass species, and this will be followed up with help and guidance on how to survey a site, with volunteers 'adopting' a site that works for them, either one that is close to their home or they particularly like. This project is perfect for a wide range of people from those who have an interest in the natural world but don’t feel they are particularly skilled, to those who feel they are competent botanists. Whatever your level of knowledge, you are welcome to join us to learn more about the wonderful flowers of the limestone hills, at a glorious time of year, whilst gathering really important information that can be used for influencing the management of these special places. Even if you consider yourself an expert, we'd love you to join us and help those less skilled or confident. The survey method is really simple, and we hope to inspire people to 'adopt' a site or sites and carry on with a survey each year so that they really get to know a place and the wildflowers there. Lots of training, guidance and support will be given. There is also potential to survey for the rarer species on some sites where we are looking to re-introduce some species.

We'll be indoors in the morning and out on a National Trust site in the afternoon. Equipment and materials will be provided, and we will have someone dedicated to help and support for volunteers. Volunteers, after receiving training, will be undertaking a survey on a particular site or sites with some mentoring, this summer and ideally next summer, with an early autumn survey for some of the sites. Volunteers will work in pairs as we have found this works really well. Further training may be offered. Travel expenses are paid for survey visits. Bring lunch, snacks & drinks to the training events.
