Rachael, of Cat and Sparrow is a prolific and talented hand dyer. We’ve worked on many collaborations with her in the past and you folks love her stunning shades and interesting fibre blends, which we often create for her here at our Devon Mill.
What we LOVE about Rachael is that she also dyes up her beautiful colourways on fibre tops, as well as yarn, which is super exciting for all us spinners! But how does hand dyeing on skeins of yarn compare to fluffy fibre? That’s what we’re excited to find out in this session with Rachael.
Rachael will be discussing the differences between dyeing up yarn and fibre, highlighting the properties of each, and how that can affect their behaviour in the dye bath. We’ll be chatting about the practical and creative issues presented by each, and talk about solutions, workarounds, look at some samples, and see how those skeins and fibre can look so varied when worked in a project.
This event will be hosted on Zoom. It is one of many being planned for our Virtual Mill Open Weekend celebrations. Please follow this link to see all that we are planning for this year's Virtual MOW.
We know Eventbrite can be a little tricky to use. If you sign up then we will email you the zoom link about 10 mins before the event begins.

Tutor Bio:
Rachael is a dyer, knitter, crocheter and spinner based in Bristol. She’s been obsessed with yarn and fibre for almost 15 years, and dyes sumptuous bases with a focus on British wool and sustainable fibres.
Rachael has been spinning and dyeing fibre and yarn since 2012, and loves filling her life with colour and texture. She creates beautiful colour mixes and seeks out fibre blends that makers love to look at, touch and transform. Rachael dyes these in her home/studio using non-toxic acid dyes, which produce the most wonderful, rich colours. You can also find glorious blended fibres in her shop!
