Description
"I am clear, martyrdom in the name of strength is suicide." - Liz Alexander
The No Fly on the WALL Academy presents its second event of the year, following hot off the heels of our 'Taking Up Space' workshop. It's time to explore pain, vulnerability, and the 'strong black woman' trope. Is it a blessing or a curse? Is showing weakness as a black woman futile? Why are so many of us afraid to cry? Were we simply born to suffer? Why do we always put others first? What makes black women especially vulnerable to abuse? Why do we hide our pain?
We will be joined by Guilaine Kinouani, who will facilitate this intimate discussion.
Guilaine is therapist an 'aspiring intersectional feminist and equality enthusiast' who is currently working toward a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology. Before this, she completed a degree in Cultural Studies and studied Counseling Psychology after obtaining a Masters in Transcultural Mental Health. Professionally, Guilaine has worked with some of the most marginalized and disenfranchised groups in various roles, and as a result she is particularly interested in liberatory, community psychology and more socially informed approaches to clinical practice. Guilaine believes that traditional individualistic Euro-male-centric approaches in therapy may not be best placed to support and empower racialised minorities to live and thrive in a world that it often hostile to them. She aspires to work in ways that reflect the socio-political context and that are more Afrocentric. She writes and blogs on the intersection of mental health, social justice & oppression. Come along and expore these questions and more with us. We have no doubt that this will be a very special event.
** This event is for self-identifying BLACK women only**
