Event description

Description

Last years Grass Strips, Farm Strips talk was a huge success and subsequent visits to Fenland and Salcombe proved popular so we thought we’d keep up the practice and visit Manor Farm Airstrip.

Don’t forget trips to non-licensed trips need club approval and if your a regular reader of the AAIB monthly reports you’ll appreciate why, as there’s so many things that could catch you out at unfamiliar and challenging strips. That said with the right training and planning extending your boundaries can be a good thing.

We were looking for a nice place to fly to and have a meal and have chosen (subject to weather, permissions and ground condition on the day) the Pheasant at Keyston.

The strip is just to the west of Keyston village, which is approx midway between Huntingdon and Kettering and just to the south of the A14.

The strip is a good example of a strip that needs respectful consideration. Orientation is approx 01/19 and has a gradient that slopes down from North to South - consider the balance between surface wind and the slope. For example you may want to try to land uphill and take-off downhill unless the wind is significant. The grass surface is a reasonable 690metres normally in good condition and is just wide enough in parts (mainly to the north and middle) to park several light aircraft without restricting landings/take offs - but again beware of the parked aircraft when landing and taking off in case of careless parking and one of my previous visits there was a ridge to side of the runway which can be less obvious dependant on the crop at the time.

The local Pub is the Pheasant which is the one of the best Pub/Restaurants for food in Cambridgeshire and the staff on past visits have been lovely. It’s only a pleasant 400 yard stroll east of the strip, lunch is a must but no beer for the pilots!

The farm does ask that you leave a donation of £10 by way of landing fee towards the up-keep of the airstrip and village hall on the bar at the pub.

The Pheasant started serving top quality food in 1964, before the term gastro-pub had been invented. It's a beautiful, thatched, traditional inn, set in a sleepy farming village. The large bar is a traditional and unspoilt mixture of oak beams, large open fires and simple wooden furniture. At the rear there’s an airier Garden Room with a sunny and stylish patio garden beyond.

Simon and Gerda have been running The Pheasant since January 2012, with John Hoskins (whose family have been involved for 50 years) providing support.

There’s great food, a genuinely warm welcome, real ales, award-winning wine list for the non-flyers, log fires and a herb garden. Everything you would hope for in a country inn.

So make sure your current on grass and join us for a fabulous day out.
