Event description

Description

We've been to the beautiful island of Jersey countless times as a club and the islands annual air show (Thursday 13th) is a great excuse to visit. There are some beautiful beaches, lots of history and some great places to eat drink and be merry.

If you've not visited before you'll love it and want to go time and time again. We plan to pop into Guernsey too. Great if you're sharing the flight with another pilot and wanted to collect some new airports in your log book.

Jersey is the largest of the Channel Islands, between England and France. An independent, English-speaking territory with a mix of British and French cultures, it’s known for its beaches, walking trails along cliffs and inland valleys, as well as its defensive castles. The Jersey War Tunnel complex, in a former hospital excavated by slave labor, documents the island’s 5-year German occupation during WWII.

The skies above Jersey have enjoyed an annual air display for over sixty years, delighting and attracting many tens of thousands of local residents and visitors to enjoy one of the most eagerly anticipated events in Jersey’s summer programme of activities. Coupled with the fact that it is also arguably one of the finest free air shows in Europe.

First staged in 1952 alongside the air display itself the event also boast two major static displays of aircraft, one at Jersey Airport and the other in Peoples’ Park, St Helier, adjacent to the ‘arena area’ along Victoria Avenue, which for many spectators is the favoured vantage point and also boats a dedicated commentary courtesy of BBC Radio Jersey.

In 1997 the event was renamed to become the ‘Jersey International Air Display’, reflecting a move by the organisers to include a number of international aircraft alongside its traditional RAF participants. Along with the participation of many RAF aircraft the display now welcomes aircraft from further afield from as far afield as Sweden, Poland and Canada.

The annual air display is organised by the Jersey International Air Display a.r.l. a not-for-profit company, which strives to raise monies for British Service Charities and to support the Island’s tourism industry. As a result, organisers receive a grant from Jersey’s Economic Development Department, the government department responsible for tourism in Jersey and relay upon the generous support, financial and otherwise, of many leading businesses and individuals.
