Unilever, Liverpool Girl Geeks and Tablet Academy present... Flying Starts! Science and Technology workshops for little ones.

FACT (Liverpool’s vibrant centre for arts and creative technology) is a unique place to visit and it’s the perfect setting for inspiring the next generation of innovators to get into STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths). That’s why Unilever, in partnership with Liverpool Girl Geeks and Tablet Academy, are bringing you a series of practical workshops here during October half term and beyond. We will get the little ones inspired through some exciting and cutting edge workshops!

We invite 5-8 and 9-11 year olds to join us to explore some of today’s biggest design and technology challenges in quickfire, practical sessions. A range of topics will be covered; from hooking up Solar Powered Insects to delving into Virtual Reality Recycling and more!

Places are limited, so pre-booking is essential.



Workshops on the day;

Cake & Code (Facilitated by Liverpool Girl Geeks)

Interactive coding workshops (with cake!) using Erase All Kittens. In this 20 minute taster session we will look at playing with code to make a mini website or animation. We will discover coding concepts as we ‘play’ and introduce programming pioneers and role models along the way!

Fearless Futures (Facilitated by Liverpool Girl Geeks)

A fun filled and crafty session looking at your future STEM careers through the creation of visual boards. Do you dare to imagine what YOU might become?

Solar powered bugs (Facilitated by Liverpool Girl Geeks)

Using solar panels we will create solar powered insects using conductive thread and tape. Throughout this workshop we will gets hands on with tech and explore numerous E-textiles.

Recycling Robot (Facilitated by Tablet Academy)

Programming a robot (Vex or Lego) to sense colour of blocks and sort it into categories. Simulating a recycling plants organising different materials.

The Power of Wind (Facilitated by Tablet Academy)

Using Minecraft to simulate a wind turbine and generate power. Participants will use Redstone to create simple circuits that are powered by the turbine.

What Happens to Your Rubbish and Recyclables (Facilitated by Tablet Academy)

Using VR to visit recycling plants and discover how waste can be reused or recycled.
Sorting through real-life “rubbish” and discussing what can and cannot be reused or recycled.



Who’s this for?

If your child is aged between 9-11 years old and has a keen interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths related topics, then this is for them. All the sessions will be really interactive, creative and fun!

If your child is aged between 5-8 years old please book here for the earlier date of Sat 14th October.

What should you bring?

Absolutely nothing! Just a positive attitude. We’ll provide everything you need including refreshments throughout your morning or afternoon session.

Parents can find plenty to do in the local area, particularly on Bold Street. FACT has a bar, cafe, gallery and cinema within its complex, perfect for relaxing in!
