Event description

Description

A lecture on Flying the Rolls Royce Spitfire, which is still soaring high 80 years after it’s first flight. Delivered by Rolls-Royce cheif test pilot Mark Lewis.

In 1991, Mark joined the RAF where he flew the Harrier and Hawk. He attended the Empire Test Pilots’ School in 1999. Three years of Harrier testing were followed by a return to the School as a tutor in 2003 and appointment as Principal Tutor in 2005.

Mark became a civilian airline pilot in 2006 where he joined Cathay Pacific, flying the Boeing 747. His long-term ambition to work in civil flight test was realised when the opportunity to join Rolls-Royce arose.

Mark is now engaged in flight test and airline technical liaison at Rolls-Royce. During his time as chief test pilot he has flown the Boeing 747-200 Flying Test Bed, the Boeing 787 and the Mk. XIX Spitfire.

This talk will focus on Marks experiences of being one of the privileged few to fly one of the last Spitfires still in service.
