Event description

Description

British Council Wales has commissioned a consultancy that examines how sport can strengthen the image and reputation of Wales on the global stage. The research is being led by Dr Stuart Murray, a Fellow of the Academy of Sport at Edinburgh University and an Associate Professor in International Relations at Bond University, Australia along with Project Manager and Research Consultant, Gavin Price.

British Council Wales, SOAS University of London and Bond University, Australia are pleased to invite you to be part of a 'deep dive' focus group on Welsh sports diplomacy.

In its simplest form, sports diplomacy is a new term that describes an old practice: the strategic use of sport to create, build and consolidate social, cultural, economic and/or political relationships. In practice, sports diplomacy attempts to leverage sport, sportspeople and sporting events to maximise people-to-people links, development, cultural, trade, investment, education and tourism opportunities. Sport can also be used to amplify the brand of a nation, as a tool to increase international engagement or as a device to promote inclusion (for example, tackling racism, promoting the role of women in sport and society, LGBT rights).

This event will bring together key sportspeople, administrators and organisations from the Welsh, wider UK and international sportscape, policy-makers from government agencies, academics and influencers in an in-depth dialogue on Welsh sports diplomacy on behalf of the British Council Wales.

The primary objectives for this event are to contribute towards:

  • Establishing a shared understanding of sports diplomacy in the Welsh context;

  • Identifying the relevance of sports diplomacy from multiple Welsh perspectives (eg. city, regional, national, international);

  • Supporting the international relations portfolio within the Welsh Government to leverage more from Wales’ impressive suite of soft power assets, particularly the opportunities afforded through the Welsh sportscape;

  • Informing the development of a research report on Welsh sports diplomacy, including practical recommendations focused on maximising opportunities and benefits for Wales through the soft power of sport.

Your participation in this event will add to the depth and richness of our dialogue and provide the foundation for an emerging network of sportspeople and organisations, scholars and practitioners with an interest in understanding, leveraging and evaluating Welsh sports diplomacy. It will build on the consultation themes gleaned from recent focus groups at the Principality Stadium, Cardiff and in Swansea and via individual interviews with key stakeholders in Welsh sport.

Lunch and refreshments will be provided
