Event description
Discussion on the situation in Gaza with Dr Ang Swee Chai (co-founder of MAP) and Dr Mohamed Altawil (founder of Palestine Trauma Centre).

About this Event

Most of the population of Gaza are refugees; their ancestors’ land was taken from them to create Israel in 1948. Movement in and out of Gaza is virtually impossible;.bombing has destroyed many homes, hospitals and schools; the water supply is polluted; sewage and electricity systems hardly function; Israeli blockade prevents building materials being imported. UN has said that by 2020 Gaza will be virtually uninhabitable.

Dr Ang Swee Chai is an orthopaedic consultant in London. She grew up supporting Israel but since she experienced Israeli bombing of Lebanon and the massacre of Palestinian refugees in Sabra Shatilla Palestinian refugee camps in 1982 she has chosen to support the Palestinians. In 1984 she and her husband set up Medical Aid for Palestinians to supply desperately needed medical help for Palestinians. She has since worked in Gaza as a surgeon. Last year she joined the Freedom Flotilla to Gaza taking medical supplies. All those aboard were arrested before reaching Gaza, taken to Israel and deported.

Dr. Mohamed Altawil was born in Gaza but in his twenties escaped to the UK. He has since trained as a psychologist and established the Palestine Trauma Centre in Gaza. The Centre’s work includes the Fridays of Joy Project, in which young people who are often traumatized have a rare experience of fun.

There will be a collection for Medical Aid for Palestinians and Fridays of Joy project.
