Please join us for our Flagship "Focus on Law" Panel Discussion and Professional Networking event on the 4th of May from 6:00pm to 9:00pm at Mishcon de Reya LLP. The aim of this event is to launch the BPF Legal Forum as a platform for nurturing, inspiring and networking for those who wish to become lawyers and judges in England and Wales, as well as, those who wish to strategically navigate their way to greater success in their career within this field.

Deputy Senior District Judge (Chief Magistrate) Tanweer Ikram

District Judge Tanweer Ikram was born and schooled in Slough. After graduating in law from Wolverhampton Polytechnic, he was Called to the Bar (I) in 1990 and admitted as a solicitor in 1993. He was a partner in a regional firm and specialized in criminal defence and prosecution. In 2007, he was elected President of the London Criminal Courts’ Solicitors Association. Tan was appointed a District Judge (MC) in 2009. In 2013, he was appointed the Deputy Lead Diversity and Community Relations Judge and is ’ticketed’ as a specialist judge in extradition and is also an Associate Judge of HM Court of SBA, Cyprus. He is a contributing editor of Archbold Magistrates’ Courts Criminal Practice 2017 (Sweet & Maxwell) and is co-director of training for newly appointed Deputy District Judges (MC) at the Judicial College. He is Visiting Professor at the University of West London and the Pakistan College of Law in Lahore and is the holder of two honorary doctorates in law (LLD).

Omar Shah Partner Morgan, Lewis & Bockius

Omar Shah has over 20 years of experience representing clients in complex global cartel and anticorruption investigations and civil proceedings for damages for breach of antitrust laws, as well in merger control procedures and on antitrust matters, particularly those involving the intersection of competition law with media/communications regulation and intellectual property laws. His practice involves representing clients before UK, EU, and other competition authorities, courts, and tribunals and in commercial and regulatory litigation proceedings, including judicial reviews. He is General Editor of “Class Actions: A Global Guide” and current Vice-chair of the Law Society of England & Wales Competition Section Committee.

Farmida Bi Partner Norton Rose Fulbright

Farmida Bi is a banking lawyer based in the London office of Norton Rose Fulbright, where she is European Head of Islamic Finance. She has specialized in capital markets and Islamic finance for over 20 years, advising on English and New York law. Farmida has acted on numerous capital markets deals including most recently Pakistan’s US$2bn sovereign bond in 2014 and its US$500m sovereign bond in 2015; the Aberdeen Road project (one of the largest and most complex UK roads projects involving bond financing); and the restructuring of the Opera CMBS transaction (the largest commercial mortgage backed securitization default in Europe). She has also acted on many high profile Islamic finance transactions, including most recently Pakistan’s two US$1bn sukuk issuances in 2014 and 2016, the Goldman Sachs US$500mn sukuk issuance and Indonesia’s US$3bn sukuk programme and initial issuance of US$1bn of sukuk under Rule 144A and Regulation S. A recognized expert in the Islamic capital markets field, Farmida is ranked in Band 1 for Islamic finance in Chambers UK 2017 and named as a ‘leading individual’ for Islamic finance in the Legal 500 2017. Farmida is also recognized as a ‘leading individual’ for debt capital markets in Legal 500 2017 and ranked in securitization in Chambers 2017. Farmida is a graduate of Downing College, Cambridge and is qualified as a solicitor in England and Wales and a New York attorney.

Shaheen Rahman QC, 1 Crown Office Row

Shaheen Rahman is recognized as a leading barrister in Administrative and Public Law, Civil Liberties, Clinical Negligence and Professional Disciplinary law. She is instructed in high value, complex and sensitive cases including obstetric injuries, missed cancer cases and nervous shock claims. She acts for doctors and dentists in conduct, health and performance cases at the GMC and GDC. She appears in healthcare judicial reviews, and has in particular acted for the Claimant in a number of successful and innovative prison healthcare challenges. She has recently been instructed for healthcare providers in the context of judicial review challenges of the sufficiency of public consultation exercises and also in relation to the proposed closure of hospital services. She extensive experience as a Special Advocate and has appeared in many of the leading cases. She has acted for Health Trusts and families at sensitive and complex inquests, particular arising from death of children and young adults.

Mohammed Khamisa QC, Partner at Mishcon de Reya LLP

Mohammed Khamisa is a senior QC specializing in the field of commercial fraud particularly within the banking and financial services sectors and is a partner at the Mishcon de Reya LLP. He joined the firm in 2015 and sits within the Banking and Finance Group. Mohammed was called to the Bar in 1985 and was made Queen’s Counsel in 2006. He sits as a part-time judge and is a bencher of Middle Temple Inn. During more than 30 years of continuous practice he has advised clients from the UK, United Arab Emirates, India, Pakistan and other regions on a wide range of both criminal and civil matters.
