Folk Group Course Autumn 2015
Description
Brighter Sound presents a brand new folk group course with traditional fiddle star Emma Sweeney. Learn to play Irish folk tunes on any melodic instrument this autumn 2015.
This new folk group course with Emma Sweeney focuses on traditional Irish folk tunes with an emphasis on authentic style, ornamentation and embellishment. The eight week course is open to any melodic instrument, including whistle, flute, accordion, harmonica. There will be group performance opportunities to play with Emma at local folk ’sessions’ in the Manchester area at the end of the course. A great and friendly way to 'test the waters' of the local folk scene with a respected and experienced player at your side.
This course is for intermediate to advanced players of all backgrounds. Some experience of playing in folk styles is an advantage, although not compulsory. (If you are not sure about this or the suitability of your instrument to the course contact us HERE for some guidance).
Whether you are a folk player wanting to extend your repertoire and understanding of style, or an experienced musician who feels that you are tied to the 'dots' on a page and want to try something new, this course will have something to offer.
The course will be taught by ear although sheet music can also be made available for individuals who need it. It is recommended that participants bring a recording device such as a phone or mp3 recorder to the lessons if they have one. Learning resources and further listening material will be available to support individual practice.
Tutor Emma Sweeney is a Songlines Award nominated fiddler whose debut album Pangea has confirmed her status as one of folk music’s rising stars. Emma’s unique style combines her traditional Irish background with a fusion of world influences, drawing upon her experience of teaching music in India, and touring across Europe.
A distinguished and experienced live performer and teacher, Emma has played alongside a whole raft of traditional musicians, including Mike McGoldrick, John Doyle and Mick O'Brien. She has also recently supported Paul Weller in a guest appearance with The Rails.
